Case Study: Creating a “Day in the Life” for IBM

No one WANTS to spend their entire day in the office…but what if you want to sneak away and hit the trails for a quick bike ride? Or just take a little more time in the breakfast nook? That’s how we party at Revelator, and that’s how our friends at Somnio see it too. So, we created a layered narrative approach that celebrates that credo in our latest collaboration with IBM and Somnio. Somnio, a digital marketing agency right here in Austin, wanted a new IBM lifestyle film to illustrate the function and flexibility of IBM Navigator, which brings simple file “sync and share” to any organization’s web and mobile devices. Before we jump into the “how” of our case study…let’s watch the final product:

This new opportunity meant a video production shoot with a large cast, at multiple locations all around town, in a single day…but thanks to an incredibly supportive client and Revelator’s crackerjack crew, we were able to construct a fun and engaging narrative to support IBM’s new product. To highlight the product’s ability to sync and share files across devices, we were able to jump on our trail bikes as our own excuse to get out of the office.

Directed by our Creative Lead, Matt Muir, and shot by one of our favorite cinematographer’s, Mr. E.J. Enriquez, we implemented a three-perspective narrative approach that follows an account rep, a manager, and an accountant. This three-perspective narrative technique meant a great opportunity for dynamic visuals, but it also meant a lot of jumping from set to set for the Revelator family. This was a breeze for our crew, thanks to the airtight organization from our Production Manager, Alex (Bron-Bron) Bronner, and the peerless execution of our Production Coordinator, Hannah Murphy.

We also wanted to make sure our cast shared a similar visual aesthetic and complemented the sleek and simple appeal of our product, so we put together a visual approach that involved a modern business casual wardrobe with a cool and complementary palette. We also spent a good amount of time scouting diverse production location options that created a dynamic visual setting to quickly provide a visual cue to our viewer as our story hopped around to various locations. Whether it was shooting a lovely, modern home in midtown, or a Timberline Ridge bike trail overlooking the city, we were able to construct a fun and cohesive visual style.

We couldn’t have done it without a terrific client in Somnio and our amazing production team, including the best collection of actors, grips, electricians, locations folks, and PA’s you could ask for. Thanks to everyone who was a part of this production, including our own Head of Production, Chris Ohlson and the lovely sound work by our buddies at Pony Sound. It’s a project that was a blast to develop and execute and it’s always nice when it ends with a happy client and agency…and of course, it’s also nice to have an excuse to get out of the office.
