Revelator’s newest Ozarka broadcast commercial pays tribute to rodeo legend Myrtis Dightman—the first African-American cowboy to compete at the National Finals Rodeo. Directed by Revelator filmmakers Huay-Bing Law and Sam Mohney, this profile celebrates Dightman’s pioneering legacy and his enduring impact on Texas rodeo culture. Our video production company worked with GRIT and Hogarth to capture the grit, courage, and pride that define both Dightman and the Ozarka brand.
The Jackie Robinson of Rodeo
Born in 1935 near Crockett, Texas, Dightman grew up on a sprawling ranch, where he learned the cowboy way of life from an early age. In 1964, he broke barriers by becoming the first Black cowboy to ride at the National Finals Rodeo. He went on to qualify six more times, placing third in the world in 1967. Along the way, he opened doors for future generations of Black cowboys, including rodeo champion Charlie Sampson.
A Legacy Etched in Bronze
Dightman’s legacy stretches far beyond the arena. His contributions to rodeo history are honored with a statue at the entrance of Crockett’s Porth Ag Arena, home to the annual Labor Day Rodeo that bears his name. For this Ozarka broadcast commercial, we returned to the land where it all started—Crockett, Texas. There, we filmed at the rodeo grounds and at Myrtis’ home, capturing quiet reflections, treasured memories, and the wisdom of a true Texas pioneer.
