Revelator’s Ohlson Nominated for Film Independent Spirit Award
Revelator is happy to announce that our Head of Production, Chris Ohlson, has been nominated for the prestigious 18th Annual Piaget Producers Award. The Film Independent Spirit Award’s Producers Award honors emerging producers who demonstrate the creativity, tenacity and vision required to produce quality, independent films. The award also includes a $25,000 unrestricted grant funded by Piaget…which ain’t too shabby either. Chris produced not one, but two independent films this year, the forthcoming KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER, and Revelator’s THANK YOU A LOT.
As the first event to honor independent film exclusively, the Film Independent Spirit Awards has made a name for itself as the premier awards event for the independent film community. It’s a celebration of the spirited pioneers who bring a unique vision to filmmaking, and we’re pleased as punch to be included in the list of nominees (like Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Michael Keaton and Julianne Moore!) for this years awards show.
“Together, the Zellners and I spent nearly a decade, against long odds, chasing our wild dream to bring KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER to life,” Ohlson said. “We traveled across the globe, shooting the film on two continents, in two languages. The film’s success this year, and hopefully next year as well, has been satisfying, and I won’t lie, has begun to restore some of our sanity. To be able to share our film after this epic journey feels like we’ve found our own treasure — and to have the film recognized by Film Independent and the Spirit Awards, is an incredible validation, really and truly. I’m so, so happy for David, Nathan and the entire #teambunzo.” KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER has been acquired by Amplify Releasing, and will be in theaters in early 2015.
Chris will attend the Producer’s award ceremony in Los Angeles on January 10th and will then celebrate on the beach for the official Independent Spirit Awards show on February 21, 2015, (where he’ll hopefully be sharing a table with Michael Keaton.) Chris will also be joined by his fellow Kumiko nominees, best director nominee David Zellner and lead actress nominee Rinko Kikuchi. Along with being a fantastic party, the Spirit Awards ceremony also brings together top talent from Hollywood and throughout independent film. Awards are presented for the year’s best achievements in independent film, with statues given for Best Feature, Best First Feature, Best Feature Made for Under $500,000 (the John Cassavetes Award) and many more.
Film Independent is the non-profit arts organization that champions creative independence in visual storytelling, and supports a community of artists who embody diversity, innovation, and uniqueness of vision. For the last 30 years, the Spirit Awards has been our annual celebration to recognize the finest achievements in artist-driven filmmaking. In keeping with its Los Angeles roots, the Spirit Awards takes place each year in and around a beachfront tent in beautiful Santa Monica. Currently in its 30th year, the show remains as original as the films and filmmakers it honors.
Winners are chosen by those in the know: Film Independent Members and Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) members. Voting members receive select DVD screeners and are invited to attend free screenings of all nominated films before choosing the Spirit Award winners. Its voting members include filmmakers, film industry leaders and film lovers. We couldn’t be more proud of Chris, and we’ll keep you posted as we get closer to the big show.
